The role of the photographer for hire has changed from pure documentation to content interpretation
While our skill sets remain technically visual, our responsibilities have shifted to to include market/audience savvy awareness

Visuals have never been more influential to the masses since the dark ages where the viewer was primarily illiterate

That condition may have inadvertently resumed
To overcome this new staleness might need the "hair of the dog that bit you"
Images need uniqueness, direction and subliminal "salting"
Unfortunately these are intellectual in nature SO... this requires the same of you the Photographer
Next and lastly, required of the image maker is self confidence born of introspection,
